The premium version of Dwarf Fortress is nearing a remarkable milestone of 1 million copies sold, with over 800,000 copies sold in just over a year since its launch on Steam in December 2022.

Tarn and Zach Adams shared with PC Gamer that the game exceeded 160,000 units sold in its first 24 hours, far surpassing expectations. By the end of 2022, it reached 500,000 copies sold.

January 2023 saw Dwarf Fortress generating over $7 million in revenue, making the Adams brothers millionaires. This provided financial stability, addressing health and retirement concerns.

Previously, between 2007 and 2022, Dwarf Fortress was free, supported solely by community donations, with the brothers earning just over $1 million.

The game maintains an “Overwhelmingly Positive” rating on Steam, with 95% positive user reviews. It continues to attract around 1,000 concurrent players daily.

An upcoming Adventure Mode update is highly anticipated, set to launch on April 17. It marks the first time the brothers are directly communicating with their wishlist subscribers.

With this update, over 1 million Steam users will receive an email announcement. The Adams brothers remain committed to evolving and supporting their beloved project.
