Before Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor came out in 2014, Monolith Productions had a different plan for their main project. They were working on a Batman game set in the world of the Nolan movies, called ‘Project Apollo’. It was going to be an open-world game in gritty Gotham City, with lots of stealth and fighting inspired by the Arkham games. They also planned to use the ‘Nemesis System’ that later showed up in Shadow of Mordor.

Recently, some pictures and short bits of gameplay from this Batman game appeared online, thanks to SpideyRanger on Twitter, who gathered them from different sources, including developer portfolios.

From Batman to LOTR

It turns out Warner Bros., who eventually published Shadow of Mordor, didn’t like the idea of having two Batman games at the same time. Also, just a year after Shadow of Mordor came out, Arkham Knight was released. Plus, there were problems getting approval from Christopher Nolan, who directed the Dark Knight movies, for some of the designs in Project Apollo.

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen this stuff, but it’s one of the best collections of material from the game that never got made.

It would’ve been a huge game, especially because it would’ve been the first time we saw the Nemesis System, where enemies remember the player and change based on previous encounters. Luckily, Monolith is planning to use this system in their upcoming Wonder Woman game.
