At a closed-door demo during GDC, I anticipated what MechWarrior 5: Clans had to offer, but was pleasantly surprised by the introduction of an RTS-style tactical camera. This feature allows players to command their squad of five Smoke Jaguar pilots from a bird’s-eye view of the battlefield.

Despite being part of the MechWarrior 5 series, Clans stands as a distinct entry with a revamped engine and an emphasis on storytelling. Set during the Clan Invasion arc of BattleTech lore, the game promises a narrative-driven campaign and meticulously crafted levels, departing from the procedural generation of its predecessor, Mercenaries.

During the demo, I witnessed the game’s storytelling focus in action, experiencing a cutscene that set the tone for the rookie star’s journey amidst the tumult of clan warfare. The mission showcased a gradual escalation of tension, culminating in a thrilling in-game setpiece reminiscent of other iconic gaming moments.

While the demo provided a glimpse into Clans’ potential, it felt like just scratching the surface. However, the prospect of future missions, including one inspired by “Papers, Please” but with mechs, left me eager for more.

Having previously experienced hands-on gameplay with Clans, I can attest to the continued quality of MechWarrior’s action. The introduction of squad tactics, facilitated by the new Battle Grid view, adds depth to the gameplay without overshadowing the core mech piloting experience.

Overall, MechWarrior 5: Clans seems poised to offer a fresh take on the series, balancing familiar mech combat with innovative gameplay mechanics. The developers’ commitment to expanding player options while staying true to the franchise’s roots bodes well for the game’s success.
